Balbodh Pathmala Part 2 (बालबोध पाठमाला भाग-2)
Published by Pandit Todarmal Smarak Trust (PTST), Jaipur, this second volume in the children's series introduces the core pillars of Jain ethics and the fundamental distinction between the self and the non-self.
1. Chapter List & Summary
The book consists of 12 short, engaging lessons:
- Prarthana (Prayer): A simple Hindi prayer focusing on the desire to achieve the virtues of the Jina.
- Jiva-Ajiva (Soul and Matter): The most basic lesson in Jain metaphysics—teaching that the one who "feels and knows" is Jiva, and the rest (body, toys, clothes) is Ajiva.
- Pancha-Paramesthi: A simplified introduction to the five supreme authorities (Arihant, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyaya, and Sadhu).
- Dev-Shastra-Guru: Understanding that the True God is Vitaragi (detached), the True Scripture is the word of the Jina, and True Teachers are possessionless monks.
- Saat Tattva (Seven Realities): A child-friendly introduction to Jiva, Ajiva, Asrava, Bandha, Samvara, Nirjara, and Moksha.
- Paanch Paap (Five Sins): Defining Violence, Lying, Stealing, Unchastity, and Possession in simple terms.
- Paanch Anuvrata: Small vows (like not hurting even small insects) that children can practice.
- Char Gati (Four Realms): A brief overview of the cycle of birth in Heaven, Hell, Human, and Animal realms.
- Kashaya (Passions): Introduction to Anger, Pride, Deceit, and Greed as the "dirt" of the soul.
- Tirthankara Mahaveera: A simplified story of Mahaveera’s life and his message of "Live and Let Live."
- Samyak-Darshan (Right Belief): Defining true faith as the firm belief in the soul being different from the body.
- Kahani (Moral Story): A story illustrating the importance of honesty or the fruits of helping others.
2. Key Philosophical Concepts
A. The Science of Differentiation (Bheda-Vijnana)
- Even at this basic level, the book teaches children to identify themselves as the "Soul" (Jiva) and not the "Body" (Shareer).
- Example: "The eye sees, but the Jiva knows. I am the Jiva."
B. Compassion (Daya)
- The lessons on Paap (Sin) emphasize that hurting others is actually hurting one's own soul.
- It instills a sense of responsibility toward all living beings, from ants to animals.
C. The Nature of God
- It clarifies that God does not sit in judgment or grant favors; rather, God is a "Model" of what we can become through self-effort.
